Luego continuó la contundencia de la desgracia amorosa en ‘Robbers’ y, más tarde, gritaron a todo pulmón que amaban a sus amigos virtuales con ‘Love Me’. The 1975 es un continuo que, si bien varía entre discos, nunca pierde su esencia.
Caracterizados por ofrecer un “pack completo”, el lanzamiento de un nuevo álbum incluye un cambio de estética y forma de comunicación que permite identificar claramente cada una de sus eras. Son coronados los reyes de titular álbumes con nombres largos —como su trabajo I Like It When You Sleep, For You’re So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (2016)—, retornando en el 2018 con una nueva apuesta.
A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, con fecha de lanzamiento próxima, respeta el concepto general de The 1975 al lanzar nuevo material. La estética rosa y blanca que predominó en I Like It… es ahora reemplazada por un blanco y negro sofisticado y serio en A Brief Inquiry…, álbum que será parte de una serie denominada Music For Cars, compuesta tanto por dicho disco como por su extended play. Como ocurrió con su antiguo trabajo, que fue anunciado varios meses antes a través de un cambio abrupto de estética tanto en Instagram —de donde eliminaron todas sus fotos— como en todas las plataformas y redes sociales, la introducción de A Brief Inquiry... se dio de la misma forma: con un cambio de fotografías, de paleta de colores y de estilo pictográfico.
Retomando elementos del diseño propio de flyers informativos con estética minimalista, con fotografías de colores de baja intensidad y algo reminiscences a lo analógico, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships se presentó primero en forma de poema en un poster con número de catálogo. Luego, continuaron con una serie de afiches con distintas inscripciones que hacen una sátira a la modernidad, con títulos como “planned obsolescence” y fotografías de los miembros de la banda en una atmósfera brumosa que recuerdan las duchas calientes.
‘Give Yourself a Try’, el primer corte de difusión, es una ventana a un álbum que musicalmente continúa la línea del anterior, ya obviamente alejado de los toques más rockeros que tenía The 1975 (2013) y consolidándose en el britpop ochetnoso y synthpop que caracterizó canciones como ‘Love Me’ o ‘The Sound’. Con unos sutiles toques de renovación (como el pelo naranja de Matty), permanecen en la esfera de las letras dignas de posteos de Tumblr —que se ha consolidado como una de las plataformas donde más seguidores recolectaron—, la honestidad irónica y una galantería desfachatada que puede ser explicada únicamente por sus propias letras: “a sycophantic, prophetic, socratic junkie wannabe”.
'Give Yourself a Try' es una cuota de honestidad en una banda que nunca dejó de ser fiel a su estilo, cambiando, irónicamente, sin cambiar del todo.
