Le encantaba la comedia y era el primero en reírse de sí mismo y de su ex banda. Tan así fue que encontró en Monty Python, la icónica troupe de comediantes, un grupo de amigos que lo entendían mejor que sus colegas en The Beatles, y allí halló confort durante sus momentos más turbulentos con los de Liverpool hasta su fallecimiento, del cual hoy se celebra un nuevo aniversario.

Para los poco versados en el asunto, Monty Python’s Flying Circus fue un ciclo televisivo estrenado a finales de los ‘60. Los integrantes y guionistas del mismo eran Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones y Terry Gilliam. Juntos crearon una revolución en la manera de presentar sketchs y escribir comedia. Tenían un estilo muy irreverente, sarcástico, ácido y absurdo, y fueron para ese género lo mismo que George, Paul, John y Ringo fueron para la música.
Tan importantes fueron que hasta influenciaron a los Fab Four. Si bien el programa no salió al aire hasta 1969, los integrantes ya estaban haciendo de las suyas en el West End y en otras transmisiones de la BBC. La película Help! (1965) indudablemente está influenciada por ellos, en especial la escena de Ringo Starr con el tigre, donde para calmar al animal todos deben cantar la quinta sinfonía de Beethoven.
Harrison ya era un ávido consumidor de sus sketchs, a tal punto que escribía cartas a la BBC diciendo lo genial que era el show. Pero fue recién en la noche de estreno de la clásica película Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975) donde el músico y los comediantes se conocieron en persona, y así dieron inicio a una amistad que duraría muchos años. Al mismo tiempo, el ex-Beatle se encontraba en los inicios de su carrera solista y para esta etapa deja salir su lado más humorístico en sus videos, lo que puede verse en ‘This Song’ y ‘Crackerbox Palace’. Es muy probable que este cambio haya sido fruto de esta relación.

George estaba tan encantado con la idea que decide hacer un cameo en una escena junto a Michael Palin, otro de los Python, en la que toma el rol de un periodista que entrevista a Palin, presidente de Rutle Corp (parodiando a Apple Corps), y mientras hablan las oficinas de la compañía son desvalijadas por fanáticos.
Sin dudas el hecho más importante que confirmó esta amistad entre el creador de ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ y los seis comediantes fue cuando el músico financió por completo la producción de la película más famosa del sexteto: Life Of Brian (1979). Cuando nadie quería invertir en el film, él vendió una casa, creó una productora de cine y puso toda la plata para que se pueda filmar. ¿La razón? Simplemente quería ver la peli. John Cleese dijo en varias entrevistas que “George pagó la entrada de cine más cara de la historia”, y como recompensa le dieron un cameo muy pequeño.
En el año 2002 se llevó a cabo el aclamado Concert For George en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres, en el que se presentaron todos sus amigos para recordar al genio. Los Monty Python subieron a escena para recrear dos de sus canciones más conocidas y las favoritas del guitarrista: ‘Sit On My Face’ y ‘The Lumberjack Song’. Sin duda, uno de los puntos más altos de la noche.
George Harrison falleció el 29 de noviembre del 2001 dejando un legado musical gigante. Aunque escribió canciones brillantes como ‘Something’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’ y ‘My Sweet Lord’, y nos demostró cómo su espiritualidad cambió su estilo de vida, todos podemos estar de acuerdo en que lo que más le gustaba era que lo hagan reír y hacer reír a los demás.
