Dreamland - Glass Animals (Wolf Tone Records, una división de Universal)

Luego de un excelente segundo disco, séptimo de la década para SPE, Glass Animals volvió a sorprender con profundos relatos, los cuales se ejecutan en un universo musical de indie dream pop majestuoso. En How To Be a Human Being (2016), cada canción era la historia de un personaje distinto. En esta ocasión, cada tema representa una experiencia profundamente personal de Dave Bayley, que subsecuentemente rearma en tres EPs cronológicos: infancia, adolescencia y adultez. Denzel Curry es el único invitado y aporta el violento contraste necesario en una pieza por demás onírica e introspectiva.

Folklore - Taylor Swift (Republic Records)

Tras una serie de discos que la alejaron del pop-country, la cantante regresó en un álbum para el cual se permitió salir del (cómodo) espacio donde se había instalado. Con un perfil más folk y abandonando su lado pop bubblegum, lo mejor de este trabajo es la fuerza que tienen las letras, volviendo a contar una historia en cada canción. Future Nostalgia - Dua Lipa (Warner Records)

La gran Dua Lipa logra, mezclando recursos del pop una forma muy prolija, un álbum placentero de principio a fin y demuestra la evolución de new face a pop royalty de la artista británica. El esfuerzo por reivindicar y justificar su lugar en la escena resultó en un disco que marca una nueva era del género, presentándonos una figura que aún no está contaminada por las exigencias mainstream de la industria. Alfredo - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist (ESGN Records)

Tras lanzar el excelente Bandana (2019) junto a Madlib, Freddie Gibbs regresa al ruedo con Alfredo. Aquí se apoyó en The Alchemist, quien logró una exquisita producción y memorables beats, los cuales complementan muy bien al MC. Uno de los puntos más alto es ‘Scottie Beam’, donde juegan con “la revolución no será televisada”, frase de Gil Scott Heron, trasladandola a "mi ejecución tal vez será televisada", una frase que se vió en las protestas de Black Lives Matter. Los feats incluyen figuras como Tyler, The Creator, Rick Ross y Benny The Butcher.

What’s Your Pleasure - Jessie Ware (PMR, Interscope & Virgin EMI)

Jessie Ware logró «salir de la melancolía» a través de un pop bailable hipnótico. En el 2020 se vio un fuerte renacer del nu disco dentro del dance pop, pero a diferencia de muchos otros trabajos, este no solo depende de su valor nostálgico. Las voces se mantienen suaves y emotivas como en sus anteriores álbumes, pero el acompañamiento musical entiende a la perfección lo que uno busca con la música disco.

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters  (Epic)

El quinto álbum de estudio de Fiona Apple es un manifiesto de su liberación como mujer y artista —acorde a los tiempos que corren—, que bien podría resultar en una invitación a seguir sus pasos. En sus letras, dice lo que hay que decir sin vueltas, incomode a quien incomode. La combinación del tiempo, su trayectoria y su vida personal resultó en una obra que destila madurez artística y nulas intenciones de ser pretenciosa. Leé la reseña completa acá.

Microphones In 2020 - The Microphones (P. W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd.)

Tras 17 años regresan The Microphones, probablemente el grupo más influyente dentro de la escena del indie folk. Esta banda ganó corazones con sus encantadores The Glow Pt. 2 (2002) y Mount Eerie (2003), pero se abstuvieron de grabar desde ese último… hasta ahora. El regreso no pudo ser mejor, con un hermoso y melancólico abordaje musical, un viaje a través de la vida de su líder. Para sacarle el máximo a esta experiencia, se recomienda mirar el bello video que hay en YouTube, literalmente un viaje a través de las fotos que marcaron su vida.

El cuarto disco del proyecto australiano confirma lo que su antecesor Currents (2015) ya avisaba: el cambio de dirección en la exploración de Kevin Parker es definitiva. Una vez más perduran los teclados y las atmósferas sobre las guitarras, pero todo siempre bajo una clave bailable y energética, con el viaje psicodélico como destino final.

Cuando The Strokes anunciaron el lanzamiento de The New Abnormal a principios del 2020, aún no podíamos siquiera imaginar que su título se convertiría en parte de la jerga de nuestra cotidianidad. Más allá de la premonición, su regreso tras cuatro años de silencio fue de la mano de una pieza que mira hacia el pasado con los pies bien anclados en el presente, una oda a la identidad desde la sabiduría de la adultez. Con atmósferas tan diversas como los colores que decoran su portada, fue sin dudas el álbum perfecto para acompañar este año de nostalgia, decisiones, confusión y reflexión.

UNLOCKED - Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats (PH Recordings)

La primera colaboración de Denzel y Kenny es prueba suficiente de por qué necesitamos una segunda. En este disco, Curry cambia un poco su delivery, y la producción de Kenny le da el toque necesario para que suene como un proyecto completamente fresco. Los beats son juguetones y tienen claras influencias de Madlib o MF DOOM, mientras que las barras son pesadas y agresivas, dejando siempre a Curry bien parado frente al resto: “This nigga’s hysterical, I’m historical”.

You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere - The Districts (Fat Possum Records) 

Si en Popular Manipulations (2017) la banda empezaba a avisar que incorporarán nuevos elementos a su sonido, en YKINGA esa intención parece haberse consolidado y denotan entender qué les sirve y qué no. La intensidad rockera de los primeros discos es reemplazada por distintos paisajes que forman un viaje de subidas y bajadas constantes. Temas como ‘And The Horses All  Go Swimming’ eran impensados allá por el 2015, año en el cual debutaron, y, sin embargo, es una de las mejores canciones que han hecho hasta ahora. Eso podría resumir lo bien logrado que está el sonido que los muchachos de Pennsylvania han buscado desde hace algunos años ya. Este disco es un must para los amantes del bien o mal llamado indie.

Triángulo de Amor Bizarro - Triángulo de Amor Bizarro (Mushroom Pillow) 

Para su quinto disco, este proyecto español logró mezclar shoegaze, noise pop, post punk e indie, creando una obra variada y atrapante con un abordaje muy particular: usan dos vocalistas que van turnándose para darle una dinámica interesante. Las canciones que canta Rodrigo Caamaño son más agresivas, mientras que las de Isabel Cea más profundas. Un álbum que no debería pasar desapercibido.
