Luego de la separación de The White Stripes en 2011, Jack White se encargó de condensar sus talentos en la realización de Blunderbuss (2012), su primer álbum solista. Grabado en Third Man Studio (en Nashville), el artista abrazó los sonidos sureños emanados por la locación del mismo, realizando un disco en el que blues, folk y rock llegan a una encrucijada. Por suerte, el músico se alejó de pactos con el diablo y se enfocó en abrir la década con un material tan orgánico como particular.

El LP fue grabado y mezclado por Vance Powell, quien decidió evitar la compresión (proceso para elevar el nivel sonoro del audio), por sugerencia del masterizador Bod Ludwig, y trabajó aumentando la ganancia (nivel de ingreso del sonido a la consola). Este es un método de mezcla particular y de otra época que dejó encantado a Jack, quien buscaba (y consiguió) sonoridades de antaño.

‘Missing Pieces’ inaugura el disco manifestando una de las muchas virtudes del guitarrista: se adueña del sistema de composición más clásico (intro, verso, puente, estribillo), para empañarlo con su sello personal. Guitarras embebidas en pedales fuzz, más acordes bluseros en los teclados, sostienen una lírica que describe las secuelas de una relación rota (White se había separado hacía poco tiempo de su segunda esposa, la música y modelo Karen Elson).
A continuación, ‘Sixteen Saltines’ revela su lado más crudo, con el que supo conquistar el mundo de las seis cuerdas en The Dead Weather y The Raconteurs. Con riffs incisivos y una melodía vocal en ese registro agudo que el violero domina tan bien, deja en claro el tono desenamorado del LP. “She doesn't know, but when she's gone, I sit and drink her perfume”, vocifera White, imitando al personaje de Florentino en El Amor En Tiempos De Cólera (1985), obra de Gabriel García Márquez.
En ‘Freedom at 21’, el músico cuenta las vicisitudes que lo envuelven al relacionarse con una mujer que manipula sus emociones. Tal vez harto de sentirse controlado, decidió romper las estructuras técnicas de mezcla, y, en el segundo verso, su voz solo suena en el lado derecho del estéreo, mientras el riff de guitarra sale por el parlante izquierdo. Nuevamente, de una estructura clásica surge una decisión audaz, la cual permite otorgarle su sello a una pista que se convirtió en una de las favoritas del público.
En una declaración osada de principios y orígenes, el guitarrista reinterpreta ‘I’m Shakin’, la obra escrita por Rudy Toombs y grabada por Little Willie John en 1960. Quizás sintiéndose interpelado por la historia de vida de este último (pasó su infancia en Detroit, al igual que él), Jack decidió apropiarse momentáneamente de este clásico del rock. ¿El resultado? El acercamiento de una nueva generación a los momentos primigenios del género, y un himno para bailar entre cervezas y amigos.
En 2014 White lanzó Lazaretto, que alcanzó el mismo nivel que su predecesor y le permitió visitar Argentina en el marco del Lollapalooza 2015, dejándonos joyas como su cover de ‘The Lemon Song’ con el histórico Robert Plant.
