Dirigido por Richard Lowenstein, Mystify: Tras El Cantante De INXS (2019) nos adentra en la faceta más personal de Michael Hutchence, el frontman de la reconocida banda australiana. El documental se vale de la voz del artista y de sus propias filmaciones como principal recurso para narrar la historia, acompañados por relatos de sus amigos más cercanos. Las grabaciones caseras permiten ilustrar de forma íntima algunos aspectos de su vida como sus relaciones amorosas, las grabaciones con INXS y sus momentos de ocio. Es a través de ellas que podemos sumergirnos de lleno en las vivencias del músico en primera persona.
Parte fundamental del material son los testimonios de cinco mujeres que lo acompañaron en su vida: Ananda Braxton-Smith, Michele Bennett, Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen y Paula Yates. Con cada una de ellas el joven mantuvo una relación que luego culminó en alguna exitosa canción. A excepción de Yates, que falleció de sobredosis a comienzos de los 2000, dan a conocer cómo su vínculo con el compositor influyó profundamente en ellas.
Si bien hay varias partes que indagan sobre la historia de la banda, el film trata especialmente la vida privada del músico, retratándolo como alguien en quien convivían múltiples personalidades que salían a la luz de acuerdo a cada situación. Esto, sumado a su curiosidad por el existencialismo y otras cuestiones filosóficas, lo convertían en una persona sumamente insegura y miedosa. Su innegable talento lo ayudaba a canalizar sus inquietudes a través de sus composiones.
No todo en la vida del cantante eran chicas, música y giras. En 1992 una pelea callejera cambiaría su vida para siempre. Mientras caminaba por las calles de Copenhague con su novia Helena, se enfrentó con un taxista que lo acusó de haber estacionado mal su bicicleta. La disputa terminó con el artista tirado en el suelo y cubierto de sangre. Después de estar un mes en su casa con muchas molestias físicas, un neurocirujano en París le diagnosticó una fisura craneal que derivó en la pérdida permanente del olfato y del gusto. A partir de ese momento, todo en él se volvió más errático, afectando tanto sus vínculos como su relación con el arte. A través de las voces que conforman este relato, en especial la del propio Michael, notamos cómo la luz que lo caracterizaba se fue perdiendo hasta convertirse en una completa oscuridad.
Después de una turbulenta relación con la presentadora Paula Yates, su conducta se tornó cada vez peor. A los escándalos personales se sumaron inseguridades sobre su carrera: en los Brit Awards de 1996, fue el encargado de entregar el premio a la categoría de ‘Mejor Video Del Año’ a ‘Wonderwall’ de Oasis; al recibir el reconocimiento, Noel Gallagher le hizo un comentario despectivo: “Los que ya fueron no deberían entregarle premios a los que somos el futuro”. Los dichos hicieron eco en los medios durante varias semanas, pero en la cabeza del músico perduraron mucho más tiempo. Con el caos tomando el control, el 22 de noviembre de 1997, tras dejar múltiples llamadas a sus amigos y familiares, Hutchence se quitó la vida en el hotel donde se alojaba junto a sus compañeros de banda para celebrar los 20 años de INXS.
El documental es una fiel síntesis de su vida, basándose no en su condición de artista, sino en la de una persona cuyas batallas fueron más de lo que pudo aguantar. Lejos de ser una mera biografía o un relato cronológico de los hechos, Mystify... es un material obligatorio para mantener vivo el legado de Michael Hutchence más allá de la atemporalidad de su obra.
